Four Faces Show - Hatch Gallery
In July, the Hatch Gallery in Pasadena is pleased to present "Four Faces", a group premiere exhibition by established artists Anthony Licon, Michele Miller, Frank Svengsouk and James Yamasaki. Featuring paintings and sculptures created in each artists' medium of choice, from digital and ink, to paint and clay, each work delivers an unique perspective on popular culture and its influence over the creative mind. Taken collectively, these diverse works pose even larger questions about inspiration, passion, and discovering one's own artistic vision within an MTV saturated world.
ANTHONY LICON
Influenced by world travel, vintage poster art, multi-cultural societies, and world customs, artist Anthony Licon contributes six amusing and exotic pieces depicting French Polynesian inspired vignettes. Each work highlights a bright, pleasant life that’s juxtaposed by faintly subdued characters and colors, blending both digital and traditional mediums in the process. He studied Character Animation at California Institute of the Arts, and Illustration at Art Center College of Design. As a working designer/artist, his creations have seen light through Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney Online, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, McGraw-Hill, and the Tournament of Roses Association, among others.
MICHELE R MILLER
Mingling sculpture and paint, artist Michele Miller has created an exciting assemblage of sculptures that further ignite the imagination. Visually inspired by early-century children’s book illustrations, religious iconography and the creations of Ray Harryhausen, Miller’s sculptures teem with visual symbolism that adds to the story within each work. She was raised in the small town of Cabin John, Maryland, where as a child she submersed herself in traditional folktales and myths. She later traveled west, graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and has since used her artwork as a means of newly interpreting those same timeless tales. Her work is owned by private collectors and was recently exhibited in the San Diego area.
FRANK SVENGSOUK
Originally from Washington D.C., Frank Svengsouk grew up while traveling around the World, though it wasn’t nearly as romantic as it sounds. Now grounded, he's used his pop-culture-riddled vision of the world to receive a BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and to work on projects for such clients as Asahi, USA Network, and the Discovery Channel. Drawing inspiration from traditional painting to graphic design to overheard conversations, Svengsouk’s work serves as an outlet for the odds and ends in his mind. He lives in Altadena and currently works as a designer for the Walt Disney Internet Group.
JAMES YAMASAKI
Artist James Yamasaki’s work is born from the popular culture of his youth, specifically comic books and movies. He attended various colleges and learning institutions before finally committing to his passion and entering Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he received a B.F.A. in 1997. As an illustrator, Yamasaki’s work has appeared in numerous venues, including Nickelodeon Magazine, National Geographic for Kids, The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition, The Washington Post, and Harper's. He currently resides in Palo Alto, California, where he enjoys sleeping and watching TV.
